Team headstrong will enter 2014 under 2 new teams, Greenville Velo (out of Greenville, SC) and Maddog83 (out of Tucson, Az).. It has been a great 4 years of racing, companionship, and community. We have accomplished some great things, but like all things, time moves on and so will we. See below for more details......

WNC GRAND PRIX AND OMNIUM

WOW, what an event! KP, Emily, and I competed in the WNC hill climb yesterday evening up in Black Mtn, NC. I have to say, this was the absolute most disorganized event I have ever raced in. Parking was 3 miles away from the start, no one knew where registration was, and for that matter, where the actual climb was. We were redirected and then redirected over and over. All 3 of us were starting to get frustrated. There was even talk that this was a trail climb and that our carbon road bikes wouldn't be of any use. And, the rotary man who was directing riders was talking about the shuttle that would take riders back down the mtn. Shuttle? How steep is this thing?

We finally did manage to find the climb. Even though the 3 of us were the first to get to registration, of course it was not open yet. So, we decided to go ahead and warm-up because the race was going to start in an hour. We rode the actual climb during the warm-up. The climb was listed as 3 miles at 6-7% grade. Well, we got to 3 miles and just kept riding, up and up. The actual climb is 3.5 miles at 4-5%. I informed a race director at the top that the course was really 3.5 miles, and his response, "Well, whatever it is. ". Now, at least to me, there is a big difference between 3 and 3.5 miles when you are giving an all out effort. Not to mention there was a ton of gravel at the top that people were busy kicking off the road because they didn't have a broom to sweep the finish area.

So, back down the mountain we went.....to registration where there was now a very long line. It was a good thing we pre-registered because unlike most races where preregistering doesn't get you very far, at this event, you actually got bumped to the front of the line. I got my number and asked the official what my start time was...." I don't know, whatever was listed on the internet", great answer. :). The 3 of us warmed up for another 20 minutes or so and then KP yelled at me that there was a delay of 15min....,... At this point, our warm-up had become so choppy between stopping and starting and registering.

So, to the event. The course was absolutely beautiful in the middle of nowhere. It was a stretch of 10ft wide smooth pavement with picturesque mountains in the background. The TT was tough because you could either use the big ring or the little ring, a judgement call for sure because the course was not very steep. Emily and I little ringed it, and KP smoked it in the big ring. And, thankfully, at the top they had managed to find a broom and sweep off all the gravel.

In the women's 4 event KP won with a time of 15:28 and Emily placed 2nd with a time of 16:45 out of the 4 competitors in the event.

In the women's 1, 2, 3 event, Cara Applegate placed 1st (16:09), and I placed 2nd with a time of 16:14 out of the 5 racers in this category.

So, why did I drive 2 1/2 hours to TT for 16min. in the most disorganized race I've ever competed in? I'm not sure. But, what I do know, is that after it was all said and done, I had an absolute blast with 2 of my fellow teammates. Yesterday I was reminded that one must adapt to uncontrollable conditions, the poorly marked course, the delayed start times, the course that was not quite adequately described. You must adjust quickly, go with the flow, and focus on the race ahead. There will always be gravel in the road, it is how you choose to deal with gravel that will determine your success. Sweep it to the side and race on.

With the NO-a** hole team rule, we thought we would take a BAD A** pic at the end of the race. Kp's face is super intense, haha.........

IT HELPS TO READ THE RULES and SHOW UP/FINISH

I had set a goal to be money winner in the Omnium. I was disappointed that I was 7th in the point total and they paid 5 places.

You can understand my puzzlement when a check for $30 came today?? for 5th place!

To be eligible for the Omnium, one had to complete all 3 races! so two of the riders above me in points were ineligible.

Lesson 1 - Read the rules.

I also finished last in both the RR and Crit.......sure I had cramps, I really barely finished them both.

Lesson 2 - It pays to show up and finish.

Oh, while there were about 20 competitors, not very many did all three races.

Lesson 3 - It pays to be old!

Guess I am not too old to learn lessons.

POA Crit

BMW is the place Thursday(7/29) at 6PM..........Blair is planning a women's race if they have 15......we need ya!!

I am going CAT 4/5 or Master's 35+??? Anybody in.

Be there or be square.

WILL SOMEONE BRING A CAM AND TAKE SOME PICS?? WE NEED SOME FRESH STUFF!

Offroad Assault on Mt. Mitchell

I should  have listened to Steve Baker......  awful.....just auful.......

First thing you should note is that there is no BIKE or MOUNTAIN BIKE in the event name..... That is because you will be doing a "hike a bike" for much of the "ride"....

Jim Hoffmeister and I were in the top 5 oldest participants....  (says something about our sanity) with Jim being tthe oldest..... of the 400 (maxed out) entries only 275 finished.... Jim being one of them at 9:47...

And for me..... well there is something about Mt. Mitchell and me.... I had to bail at the 35 mile mark (60 mile total) due to heat exhaustion (once again), but this time the EMC guys told me to head back to town.... if I could make it!

Words cannot begin to describe how awful and challenging (ie painful) this slugfest of a "mountain bike" ride was. I mean the descents were treacherous (I crashed 5 times), stressful (kamikazee cyclists without care for life or limb are zeroing in on you as you try to negotiate a 180 degree turn cut by a unicycle with a 200 ft drop off)..... rutted, rooted, STEEP climbs where all you can see ahead is cyclists pushing their bikes (up or down....)

And then the HEAT..... baking you as you did a 9 mile ascent up the exposed gravel climb of Curtis Creek Rd... (hey why are all these riders riding back down???    Dah....)   this is where I met my fate not a mile from the Blue Ridge where I just had to lay down in the shade......  and THAT... .....was it......

Jim slugged on.  Up to the BR thinking 5 hours with 22 left to go....maybe 3 hours..... wrong... He did not count on the thunderstorm and torrrential rain which turned a gnarly descent into a unrideable slick of red clay and wet roots......  almost 5 hours to go 22 miles......  But he finished with a smile on his face knowing he will never have to do that again......  (for me, if it has anything to do with Mt. Mitchell, I am NOT doing it...  never, ever again..... )

Here's to Jim doing Team Headstrong proud on one bad ass ride.......

WHAT A WEEKEND FOR TEAM HEADSTRONG!

We had 14 riders of the 990 that participated this weekend. Each had his/her own personal experience and perspective.

Rather than bore you with all the emotion, physical issues and heartache that I felt from my own performance, I thought I would focus on the TEAM.

There are two things that I think came out of this weekend that will endure:
* Team headstrong established itself as one of the dominant women's teams in the SE.
* Giselle established herself as one of top racers in the SE.

Here is a summary:

TT - Friday night it was hot as hell and thunderstorms were all over as they were all weekend. We had 6 riders on the course and I think we all delivered PR performances. Giselle was first in the Pro/1/2/3 group by 45 seconds and Gillespie was 18th!! The 4's were dominant as KP took 2nd, Teenie was 6th and Brady was 7th out of about 25 racers. I got 7th just behind and in front of two nationally ranked guys which bodes well for me a Nationals.

RR - We had all 14 folks at the line on Sat and Tom lead the men in a very competitive field with a 13th placement. G, again took 1st via a 3 person break. The 4's took 2nd(KP), 3rd(Stratton), 7th(Emily) and 12th(Beth).

CRIT - Sunday, the men besides me, set out but the women came on strong. G lead Sam out for 5th in the Pro/1/2/3's and got 6th herself. KP got up from a crash and finished 5th. Brady(11th) and Teenie(14th) rounded out the Cat 4 effort.

Here are the full Omnium results for teh TEAM:
Women's Pro 1/2/3 -
1st - Giselle Weekes
19th - Samantha Smith
24th - Debbie Gillespie
Women's Cat 4
2nd - Kristin Phillips
6th - Kristi Stratton
13th - Emily Wood
17th - Elizabeth Brady
18th - Christina Maddox
20th - Beth Hoffmeister
Men's - Masters 50+
21st - Tom Reynolds
Men's - Masters 60+
7th - Randall Maddox

This was a great weekend of racing and great team event. Great job, TEAM!

Oh, I almost forgot, Cristina Lindsey who is coming on for 2011, was 1st in TT, 4th in RR, 1st in Crit and the Cat 4 Omnium winner!

I'd say we look pretty tough for 2011!

TOUR PARTY TUESDAY

TEAM headstrong

We ask you to join us to watch STAGE 16 of the Tour on Tuesday after SCTAC. We will have it going in HD on the big(not huge) screen.

This one means a lot to Teenie and I because we have ridden and/or raced on every col in this stage. We have spent days in Luchon, where the Stage starts. We know the buildings in some of
the villages..........you get the picture?? Pictured here, I am at the summit of Col du Tourmalet in 2008.
The Tour will likely be decided in the 4 crucial days in the Pyrenees.

B.Y.O.F. (BRING YOUR OWN FOOD).......WE WILL HAVE WATER AND BEER.

FBC Team meals

TT - after the TT on Friday, several of us will be eating at Chili's, 253 Tunnel Rd. Asheville 28805. We chose this in order to get in/out and it is 2 blocks from the Spring Hill Inn where some of us are staying.

RR - after the RR on Saturday, several of us will be eating at the Zuma Cafe in Marshall, NC, near the start of the RR.

A STAGE RACE or OMNIUM

There is tons of mental prep but I will leave that to Teenie. You are 2-3 days out now.

Here are some practical tips:

* Rest up the week prior........rested legs are important.
* Get all your gear out early.
* Take everything you think you might remotely need.
* Tune and wash your bikes...look everything over including your tires.
* Be sure you have ridden them if anything was done to them.
* Bring extra tubes, tires and wheels, if you have them.
* Remember your trainer and bike pump.
* Leave very early for the inital race.
* Try to stay (spend the nights) as close as you can to the races.
* Only race the weekend of the race.....nothing else. This is about you and your race.
* Eat right and drink for 3 days prior and during the weekend.
* Sleep alot.
* Stay off you feet.
* Have a plan for each race along with contengies for things you cannot control.
* No matter what your performance, keep showing up and go 100%. Today's goat is tomorrows hero and vice versa.......note: Le Tour de France.

I am sure you guys can add to this with commments!!

CYA out there!

Piedmont Triad Omnium

Brady and I competed in all four races of the Piedmont Triad omnium this weekend. Unlike most of my teammates, I don't have an endurance background. Before I started road racing in 2008, I was a BMX racer....not really an endurance sport (think 30-45 second race with almost an hour break between races). This is the first year I have really felt I have the stamina to be competitive over consecutive days of racing. The Piedmont Triad was my first test.

Crit

The 1,2,3 women and the 4's were combined (4's scored separately). The Gary Fisher women's team was well represented with 5 riders. I started out on the conservative side, sitting near the back for much of the first half. The Fisher girls were throwing out a constant stream of attacks, but others were willing to chase. I stayed in the pack. Soon, no one wanted to chase anymore...I moved to the front pulled us to the break. As soon as it was caught, another went. No one was coming around me, and no way I could chase this one down. Suddenly, Brady jumps on the front and pulls us to the leaders. By now we have 3 to go, and I am hurting a little and thinking "there's no way I can sprint". Another attack goes, and I somehow find the ability to chase. With one to go, I am sitting on the back of a small group....the rest of the field strung out behind us. We come out of the last corner and I move up beside the group. With 400m to go I look over, and I am thinking "why hasn't anyone gone yet." I decided to go first, and apparently got a great jump, because no one came around me before the line. I was super pumped to get the win. No way would I have been in that group without Brady's help.....she ended up finishing 4th among the 4's.

Time Trial

The next morning we had a 12.5 mile rolling TT. Flat to uphill for the first 3 or 4 miles. A left turn and we have two short stair step climb with a gradual uphill to the next left turn (now about half way). Long flat to downhill section to the next left where you go downhill and up a longer climb up to the finish. I felt like I had a good ride, but the Fisher team has a few great time trialists (one a former national champion). I had hoped for top 5, but ended up 6th.

Brady was having a solid ride, but dropped her chain and spent a long time trying to get it back on. The crazy thing is that she was shifting her rear gears and the chain fell off the chainring. Bad luck :(

Street Sprints

Yes, that is a Hooters girl holding me up for the start. I wonder what the guys in the background are looking at? I thought I would enjoy this race ( being more of a sprinter), but I actually was pretty bad at it. This was my first time really doing street sprints, so I will just consider it a learning experience. 5th place for me, and Brady took 2nd in the consolation round. How about one more Hooter's picture?

Road Race

I will admit, I wasn't thrilled about doing the road race. I was thinking about suffering and the heat....things I shouldn't focus on. We had a large combined field, and there were a lot of fresh legs. We had an agreement with some other ladies that we would work to chase down the attacks from the Fisher ladies. Our plan worked for the first part of the race, but three girls did eventually get down the road. I got trapped in the back a number of times, and didn't even see them go. One more reason to not ride in the back. Brady and I finished in the main field. We both took 6th our categories. I some how still got 3rd in the omnium, my goal had been to finish in the top ten. Brady was 6th (or maybe 5th)...sorry I can't remember, it's been a long weekend! The dropped chain took a toll on her omnium points. Now we get to do it all over again next weekend.

Greenville Spinners TT #3

I won't mention how hot it was (100°) during yesterday's Greenville Spinner's TT that my old teammates (Greenville Women's Cycling/BiLo) help put on. I will just mention how well Team Headstrong represented! We had six Headstrong members there. We all made the first page of the OVERALL results (which was a goal of mine in the past when I went to big stage races...simply to make it onto the first page of the "communique"). Results were incredible! In Masters 50+, Tom was 2nd, and Perry was 4th. In the Women's field, G was 1st, KP 3rd, Sam 4th, Brady 5th! Cristina Linday was 2nd in the Women, and Patrick Smith was 2nd in the Men's B(4/5), just to give kudos to some people that we are hoping to get to know a little better!

On a personal note, I surpassed a goal I set for this TT for myself. Teenie shared with me some very encouraging words she recieved from Jon, and then passed on more from herself. Without question, this team has been my motivation to get riding (hard) again! I am grateful!

FBC

It is upon us!

Another day in cycling paradise....

Oh and if the road ends........you don't let that stop you.......

SCTAC - COMING BACK

Teenie and I will be out there this evening. WE ARE COMING BACK after the crash a few weeks ago. Her goal is to finish the total ride and mine to shake some fear I have been toting around and do some very hard efforts.

The safest place is the FRONT. We will be there and we would really appreciate seeing some TEAM headstrong jerseys up there with us. Can we set tempo for 5-6 laps??

FBC Hotel

We are staying at the Springhill Inn of Friday/Saturday night.

"What planet are you from......."

That is what a cyclist asked Beth at the top of the Galibier (mile 71 and after climbing 38.5 km)..... on her way to a 4th place overall for 50+ Females....... AWESOME!

La Marmotte........ 108 miles, 16,500ft of climbing...7,000 riders..........a BEAST!

I finished in 9:06 after dying on the Alpe d'Huez after a great ride for top honors of Team Headstrong (it took me 2hrs to climb the Alpe........ suicidal). Beth was 9 minutes in arrears but took 4th overall in her class........ Jim was 73rd overall 60-66.  And our friend Ken was 87th in the 60-66 age group...... Basically we were 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th from the USA.    Very, very tough ride..... epic....

Our ride today was a majestic ride up to La Bernardie below Les Deux Alpes.......

News Items 7/3

John Davidson of the Greenville Spinners spotted Beth, Jim and Bird on Alpe d'Huez last week. He recognized our kits!!

I talked to Bird from France tonight. All 3 of our team members finished La Marmotte .........more to follow.

Perry was 3rd in his AG in the SC State 5k Championship at Furman today with 21:56....smokin'.
Emily, Teenie, Cristina Lindsay and I rode the FBCC today. It is not 6500 feet of climbing as the web site states....only 3800! And, Cristina L can ride.

Have a good 4th.

Friday, July 2, 2010

As Bird said, words and pics can not describe it. We climbed every mountain, got caught in a Jr's race, did some shopping (very exhausting) and ate the Italian cuisine.
So many highlights! Climbing Mt Grappa was fantastic- 27KM/5000+vertical feet/2:02 hours. Mostly though, it was riding the roads and the mountains that have been traveled during the Giro for decades, absorbing a little culture, and testing one's self that will be remembered most.
This is Super Bowl of cycling. It makes Saluda seem like bump and Caesar's Head seem like a hill.
The crazy thing is how reasonable the cost to do it really is. If you can dream it, you can make it happen!
